The district operates three elementary schools, one middle school, an alternative education school and one comprehensive high school. Tehachapi is well known for their diverse and excellent academic and athletic programs. In 1999, the community passed a $24 million bond to construct a new state-of-the-art high school, which opened in August 2003. In addition, the new Cummings Valley Elementary was built and opened in 2001.
Tehachapi High School offers an extensive variety of academic courses and extracurricular activities. The East Kern Regional Occupation Program includes training in criminal justice, certified nursing assistant and restaurant careers. The core curriculum prepares every student for their next step and the Advanced Placement classes allow students to earn college credits. Sixty percent of last year’s graduating class is currently enrolled in a two or four year college. The students annually have garnered honors in Academic Decathlon, Mock Trials, Mathletes and the Space Settlement Design competition sponsored by NASA. Football, along with the 13 other varsity sports, is well known throughout the Central Section of CIF as the athletic teams consistently vie for league titles and section honors.
Jacobsen Middle School provides a strong academic base to their students through a team teaching interdisciplinary program. The middle school includes sixth through eighth grade students with an enrollment of 1,100.
There are three elementary schools within the Tehachapi Unified School District. Two of our elementary schools have API scores over 700 and a third with a score over 800.
The state sponsored Digital High School program has brought every room at the high school on line to the world. Monroe High School, along with Tompkins, Golden Hills and Cummings Valley elementary schools also have access to the Internet from any place on campus. The commitment by the board of education, the administration, the teachers and the community ensures that the Tehachapi graduate will be technologically ready for the academic and business world of tomorrow.
